Distortion in blankets & fabric

When a design is created with the cm measurements and then gets uploaded in the Online Designer, we often get asked "My design doesn´t fit, are the measurements wrong?". Please see details explained on this page:

General variance of the finished measurements

Every design is custom made. Since there are many different designs, the products don´t always come out the same. There are several factors that affect the actual size of the product (the number of colors, how pixelated the design is (how often the color changes), how the colors are distributed in the design etc).
Material is another factor: a blanket made from acrylic yarn comes out larger than a blanket out of cotton, even though they have the exact same number of stitches, because the yarn is high bulk. So with all those factors, the ready made size cannot be predicted exactly on the cm.

If you need exact measurements and proportions in your product, maybe it´s better to choose a printed or embroidered product, because this is done on a blank with exact measures. We don´t offer that.

Why the proportions of the design and blanket may differ

The proportions of the pixel file and the final measurements don´t match. The number of pixels and number of knit stitches in the blanket are the same, one pixel then turns into one knitted stitch in the product. Since a pixel is perfectly square and a knitted stitch is more v-shaped, there is a slight distortion.

Pixel to knit distortion

How can I compensate the distortion?

You can create your design with the cm measurements and then stretch it to the pixel measure. This way you can cancel out the distortion that happens in the production.

If you want to correct single pixels after that you can download the design from the designer and edit it with the pencil tool in Photoshop.

Preview of the distortion

Some products (2-colored blanket & fabric panel) have the distortion already shown in the online designer. The design area in the middle shows the pixel file, one pixel you see there turns into one knitted stitch in the product. In the smaller preview on the right side you see how the finished blanket would look like. There you can see how the distortion will affect your design. You can use this preview to compensate the distortion, but it´s not exact.

The left circle looks perfect in the left preview. But in the mockup on the right side you can see that it would be stretched in the blanket.

The right circle was stretched in the other direction to compensate the distortion.
